5.2 Focus Groups

As groups best enable the exploration of surprise information and new ideas, the definition of Small Sins Allowed was discussed by a focus group. “That discussion provided the opportunity for a flexible, free-flowing format. Spontaneous responses were expected to reflect the genuine opinions, ideas, and feelings of the group members about the topic under discussion” (Lopez, 2015, p. 220).

The sessions were structured according to the following scheme. First, during a free association phase, the facilitator asked what words or phrases come to mind when the definitions explored were named. It was seen that their simple mention was basically intuitive, as comments were aligned in some sense with the meaning of both constructs. Second, each definition was defined, and further comments collected now under the light of a clear definition. Third, three citations were mentioned by the facilitator to trigger the discussion. Fourth, a role-play phase was conducted around one or two citations. As a result of the two focus groups sessions, the definitions were evaluated.
